Monarch Butterfly Art

We are very lucky to have monarch butterflies hatch in our class.  We looked closely at their wings and drew close up pictures of the wings.  We had to really persist to colour the whole page in with pastels.  It was tricky to blend the two colours together.

Easter Eggs

Thank you Mrs Lynch and Mrs Simpson for buying the whole school Easter Eggs!

Congratulations

We have been learning to Manage Ourselves.  Hollie and Heather are brilliant at getting themselves organised for learning and staying on task.  Keep up the great work!

Fire Department Visit

Wow!  We have had a very exciting day today.  The Halcombe Volunteer Fire Department came to our school.  They taught us how to be safe in a fire, suggested we talk to our families about making a fire escape plan, and their fundraiser.  They are going to run up 1103 stairs in the Sky Tower.  That sounds like hard work.  They are raising money for leukemia.
Te Aniwa presented Mr Darling with the money we raised.
Some people dressed up in their clothes.  It was very hot.

We needed to guess how far their hose would squirt water.
When they left the fire engine made a siren sound.

Sausage Sizzle

Yum!  We love sausage sizzle day.  The money raised is being donated to the Halcome Volunteer Fire Department for their cancer fundraiser.

Small Ball Skills

We are learning to develop our small balls skills.  We have lots of fun.  We hold the ball with different parts of our bodies.  We can roll, bounce, catch, throw, aim, and play crazy games.

Paddington Bear Visit

Last week Zoe bought Paddington Bear to school.  His favourite food is marmalade.  Not many of us have tried marmalade before, so today we tried it.  It was very sour and bitter.  Only 6 children liked the marmalade. Even Mrs C doesn't like marmalade.

We really appreciate all the support you give us!

Exciting News!

During the day, Zoe walked past our swan plant and noticed a caterpillar hatching from its chrysalis.  The class gathered round and watched a butterlfy slowly creep out.  It was amazing!

Our Wonderful Weekly Writer

The children were given the challenge of retelling one of our favourite stories.

Giraffes Can't Dance

Gerald couldn't dance.  He was terrible at dancing.  He stepped onto the dance floor, but the lions saw him coming and the lions started to roar.  Gerald walked away.  He met a cricket.  He listened to the cricket play a tune.  He did the most amazing dance.  "Yay!"  said Gerald.  He was the most exciting dancer in the world.

Finishing off our Portraits

We have spent a long time making our portraits.  We finally finished them today.  We cannot wait to show them to you at our 3 Way Conference next week.  If you cannot make it, they will be on our blog next week when they are dry.

Our School Chicken Expert

The kiwifruit reading group read an article which interviewed a cockatoo owner.  They were then given a task to create questions to interview our school chicken expert - Tyler.
Why do chickens not crow?
Boy chickens, called Roosters, crow.  Female chickens are called hens.  They do not crow.
Why do birds crack open bird seeds and nuts?
It's their diet.  Mrs Christiansen said the birds do not like to eat the shells.  Theyonly like to eat the insides.  The shells are not good for their diet.
Are chickens friendly?
Sometimes, if they are tame.
How big are chicken brains?
About the size of the chicken's eye.
Do chickens go out of their cage?
Yes.
Do chickens like getting rubbed?
Yes, if they are friendly.
Do chickens get their wings cut?
They can.  People cut part of the feathers off one wing.  Then when they try to fly, they fall back down.
Do chickens fly?
No.  They can jump high and flap their wings to go a short distance.  But they cannot fly like other birds.
Do chickens drink water?
Yes.
How do chicks hatch out of eggs?
The mother needs to sit on the egg for three weeks (21 days).  You also need to have a rooster.

Visiting Mrs Simpson

Oh no!  Mrs Simpson was going to cancel our lunch breaks.  We wrote explanations to explain the importance of lunch breaks.  Today we went to her office and shared our reasons.  Yippee, yahoo!  We can still have lunch breaks.  Thank you Mrs Simpson!
